Bava’s
The Girl Who Knew too Much has certain affinities with Austen’s
Northanger Abbey. In Bava’s film Nora Davis is an American thriller aficionado who travels to Rome and finds herself embroiled in a murder mystery much like those presented in her favourite reading material. In Austen’s novel Gothic enthusiast Catherine Morland visits the titular abbey which, from her reading of
The Mysteries of Udolpho, she expects to be a place of Gothic horror and mystery.
